The 2016 Design Census is a partnership between AIGA and Google. It grew out of the annual AIGA Salary Survey and recognizes the need for open source data about designers, for designers. It is supported by numerous design organizations including IDSA, IXdA, SEGD and Ico-D, the NEA and many design schools.
The state of the design industry is parallel to many others in our country: a lack of diversity and unequal pay. But if we deliver on our shared future vision of design being responsible, adaptable and relevant, the statistics in this map should reflect the diversity around us.
We chose to illustrate gender, ethnicity and pay for major U.S. cities in addition to highlighting their vision of the future of design by demographic. This future is cast as increasingly digital, but also forecasts changes in the name of social and cultural accessibility.
