This year, we have had the honor of working with the Lower East Side Partnership on one of their neighborhood beautification projects, 100 Gates Project. #100GATESProject partners business with artists to create murals on their security roll-down gates. Since the summer of 2014, the LES Partnership has facilitated over 100 original murals, which have had the added side effect of deterring unwanted graffiti, on security gates east of Bowery between East Broadway and Houston.
As we came on board and began working to help them spread the initiative beyond the Lower East Side, we made a trip downtown in the wee morning hours to see some of the gates first hand–since you can only see them when businesses are closed. Natalie Raben, the LES Partnership’s SVP of Partnerships and Public Affairs, met us on Chrystie Street and led us on one of her favorite tours of the gates–a curated path that allows you to see 25 gates in about 15 minutes (closer to 30 minutes if you stop and look at each gate closely). Click the interactive map below to see our route and the photos we snapped. You should check it out the next time you’re in the area!
Stay tuned for future updates on our work with the LES Partnership and 100 Gates Project.
